Flash Flood Survival Guide

Flood Watch · Guangdong heavy rainfall · Demo

Avoid rising water, protect essentials, and leave low ground early.

What is flash flood?

Flash floods can form quickly when intense rainfall overwhelms streets, rivers, drainage systems, or dry channels. Water depth is hard to judge, especially at night.

The safest decision is often early movement to higher ground, not waiting to confirm the water level. Vehicles and underpasses are especially dangerous during fast-rising water.

First-hour steps

  1. Move to higher ground and away from channels, basements, and underpasses.
  2. Put IDs, medicine, phone, cash, and power bank into a waterproof bag.
  3. Check local evacuation messages before roads close.
  4. Text your location to a trusted contact.
  5. Turn around if water covers a road.

What NOT to do

Do not drive through flooded roads.

Do not walk through moving water unless escape requires it.

Do not touch floodwater with open wounds.

Do not enter basements while water is rising.

FAQ

How much moving water can knock someone down?

As little as 15 cm of fast-moving water can knock an adult down, and deeper water can move vehicles.

Should I drive through floodwater if the road looks shallow?

No. Road damage and water depth are hard to see. Turn around and find a safer route.

What should I keep dry during a flood watch?

Keep IDs, medication, cash, phone, charger, power bank, and basic first aid in a waterproof bag near the exit.
